They are exceptionally easy to use\u003cbr\u003eand require only two external resistors to set the output voltage.\u003cbr\u003eFurther, both line and load regulation are better than\u003cbr\u003estandard fixed regulators. Also, the LM117 is packaged in\u003cbr\u003estandard transistor packages which are easily mounted and\u003cbr\u003ehandled.\u003cbr\u003eIn addition to higher performance than fixed regulators, the\u003cbr\u003eLM117 series offers full overload protection available only in\u003cbr\u003eIC's. Included on the chip are current limit, thermal overload\u003cbr\u003eprotection and safe area protection. All overload protection\u003cbr\u003ecircuitry remains fully functional even if the adjustment terminal\u003cbr\u003eis disconnected.\u003cbr\u003eNormally, no capacitors are needed unless the device is situated\u003cbr\u003emore than 6 inches from the input filter capacitors in\u003cbr\u003ewhich case an input bypass is needed. An optional output capacitor\u003cbr\u003ecan be added to improve transient response. The\u003cbr\u003eadjustment terminal can be bypassed to achieve very high\u003cbr\u003eripple rejection ratios which are difficult to achieve with standard\u003cbr\u003e3-terminal regulators.\u003cbr\u003eBesides replacing fixed regulators, the LM117 is useful in a\u003cbr\u003ewide variety of other applications. Since the regulator is “floating”\u003cbr\u003eand sees only the input-to-output differential voltage,\u003cbr\u003esupplies of several hundred volts can be regulated as long as\u003cbr\u003ethe maximum input to output differential is not exceeded, i.e.,\u003cbr\u003eavoid short-circuiting the output.\u003cbr\u003eAlso, it makes an especially simple adjustable switching regulator,\u003cbr\u003ea programmable output regulator, or by connecting a\u003cbr\u003efixed resistor between the adjustment pin and output, the\u003cbr\u003eLM117 can be used as a precision current regulator.
